The Advanced Life Support Level 2 (ALS 2) course is ideal for those healthcare professionals who are frequently involved in the response to a deteriorating patient or to a patient in cardiac arrest.

This two-day course focusses on developing advanced skills in managing deteriorating patients and cardiac arrest. The course is designed for healthcare professionals who are required to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, to lead initial resuscitation, or to teach advanced resuscitation skills on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include medical doctors, nurses and paramedics working in acute and critical care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, acute admissions units) or in the resuscitation /medical emergency team.

This is an intensive, advanced course. Candidates will receive an ALS 2 manual one month prior to course commencement.

Candidates are required to complete a pre-course multiple choice question paper to guide preparation.

Prior skills and competence in cardiopulmonary resuscitation are an essential prerequisite of this course. This course covers advanced resuscitation skills, and is designed to develop leadership and teamwork skills in managing such emergencies.

  • The ALS 2 course includes workshops, lectures, skill stations and simulation teaching that covers:

    1. Recognition, assessment and management of the deteriorating patient using a structured ABCDE approach (aiming to prevent cardiac arrest)

    2. Treatment of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, including manual defibrillation

    3. Management of life-threatening arrhythmias

    4. Preparing and planning for post resuscitation care

    5. Care for the deteriorating patient or patient in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest in special circumstances such as asthma, anaphylaxis, and pregnancy

    6. Leading a team, working as a team member, and use of structured communication skills including giving an effective handover

    7. Consideration for end of life decision making

The course is ideal for those in healthcare with frequent exposure to life-threatening crisis events needing advanced life support training.

The adult advanced life support courses are standardised national courses accredited by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), teaching evidence-based resuscitation guidelines and skills to healthcare professionals.

As an ARC regulated course, the ALS course credentials are cross-recognised by the RC (UK), New Zealand Resuscitation Council (NZRC) and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC).

Candidates on the ALS courses are derived from the medical, nursing, paramedical and allied healthcare professions. ARC Courses provide the opportunity for interprofessional education to promote the knowledge, skills, attributes and attitudes in order to work together in an effective collaborative fashion.
